Are you that someone who enjoys having a tour in a beautiful place and discovering the wonders of nature? Invite your friends now or your special someone and have a quick tour in the town of Niddrie!

Niddrie is located on the southeast of the city, southwest of the seaside area of Portobello, and west of Musselburgh in East Lothian, close to Fort Kinnaird retail park. The town’s name is considered to be of Brythonic origin, nuada tref, which means new settlement. It was historically known as Niddry Marischal.

The majority of the area was owned by the Wauchope family until the 1930s. Archibald Wauchope of Niddrie was a supporter of the rebel Earl of Bothwell in the 1590s. Eventually, the Wauchope family donated their lands to the city.

The Edinburgh Corporation built social housing in Niddrie Mains from 1927 up to the mid of 1930s. The designs were catered by Ebenezer James MacRae, the City Architect. The major slum clearance scheme was linked to this new housing project in the St. Leonard’s Ward of Edinburgh. The families from cleared areas and the local coal mining families from Niddrie were housed together.

During the 1980s and 1990s, there was a high crime rate in Niddrie and it became a rampant problem in town during these years. Some criminal acts involved antisocial behaviour, gang fights, and knife crimes. For years, the town also had problems with joyriding, and stealing cars and motorbikes among the younger generation.

Niddrie may have had encountered some unfortunate events in the past but what is essential is the current developments of the town. Currently, the Niddrie Mains estate is almost demolished and there are no attempts made to reconstruct the buildings. The lot has been mostly assigned for private housing. The Arms Length Management Organisation, PARC, is recently developing the site into a new primary school for the area. The organisation is owned fully by the Edinburgh City Council. They joint the campuses of old Niddrie Mill Primary School and St. Francis Primary School.

The town of Niddrie has become the epitome of the saying there’s a rainbow after the rain. Looking at its splendid attractions will leave you in awe and you will not even remember that the town has experienced dilemmas in the past. Some of the notable tourist destinations in Niddrie are the Edinburgh Castle, Royal Mile, and Princess Street.

Further, if you are an adventurous person, the town also has recreational activities that you can enjoy such as a full-day tour in the highlands, walking tour in Royal Mile with Edinburgh Castle admission, and hop-on hop-off bus tour. As you enjoy your tour, you will discover more the tranquility and peace that Niddrie offers.

Of course, when visiting a place, it is always better to walk with someone you love. And to make things extra special, you might like to check the florist nearby. One of the famous flower shops in town is the Flowers by McDowell.

Flowers by McDowell from Edinburgh offers a splendid flower bouquet which is designed perfectly for a certain event or occasion. Our flower shop has fresh and natural flowers which your loved one will certainly adore. The flowers of Niddrie is the real deal in town because their beauty perfectly matches the place. So, nothing could be more endearing than walking your loved one in the beautiful scenery of Niddrie with a bouquet in her arms.

But if you are just looking for tiny, decorative flowers for your celebration, florists of Niddrie will certainly guide you in choosing the best flowers for your event. Our flowers are also available online. You may visit Flowers by McDowell ‘s website for more information about us.
